(16) Methods to prevent hepatic edema (secondary obesity)

It is important to have a correct understanding of chronic hepatitis to guard against hepatic edema and secondary obesity. The earlier you aware, the better the treatment in time.  Chronic hepatitis can be cured in clinical terms and it can help to prevent secondary obesity from continuous development. Here we list below five pieces of advice:

  1. Pay attention to infant health before budding period

If there is a possibility of hepatophilic viral disease, it must be cured thoroughly using traditional Chinese medicine. Obesity may be not inherited but rather the whole family may be infected with hepatophilic virus. So parents who are virus carriers should pay attention to that. If there is a family history of obesity, the children who are valetudinarian and are in low state of health often tend to have hepatic edema. Boys usually get high female hormone and low male hormone, and may easily get secondary obesity while their external sex organs usually grow not to the mature stage. Young girls may get “stagnation of liver-energy and deficiency of blood” leading to menses disturbance, superfluous menses, which will cause anemia and induce secondary obesity.

  1. When acute hepatitis is under control, fatty liver may easily form and body figure will grow in size

In fact, if acute hepatitis is not thoroughly cured with traditional Chinese medicine during its active stage, it would mostly transform into latent period or active stage of chronic hepatitis.  Therefore, when acute icterus fade away, it does not indicate that liver disease has been cured. It is advisable to use traditional Chinese medicine for treatment.

  1. Acute or chronic massive haemorrhage is also the main reason for secondary obesity

The most common types of hemorrhagic animia are nosebleeding and stomach bleeding, hemorrhoids, trauma, childbearing and superfluous menses. It is because once infected with hepatophilic viral disease, the liver function of the patients will be affected and the blood coagulation mechanism will be abnormal. When above situation appears, the amount of bleeding will be much larger. After the convalescent period, patients often get puffiness, and their weight increase apparently and sharply. So a person should consult doctor in time when bleeding occurs and should not delay treatment. He should pay attention to pathogeny treatment and rectification, in particular supplement for high protein so as to avoid low protein and anemia which can cause hepatic edema. Therefore, treatment in time and thoroughly helps to avoid relapse of the diseases and that can prevent secondary obesity from getting severely.

  1. The effect of   “antigen-antibody complex”

Secondary obesity (hepatic edema) occurs basically because immunoreaction caused by infection of hepatitis virus produces a mass of antibody. When antigen is combined with antibody, the “antigen-antibody complex” stores in body and holds mass of inflammatory body fluid, and that results in hepatic edema. The complex deposits in different systems and tissues and causes symptoms of different chronic hepatitis extra-liver system. The disturbance of liver and kidney function, the metabolism disturbance and endocrine disorder can all aggravate to hepatic edema and secondary obesity. Chronic hepatitis patients often have viral gastroenteritis as “damp-heat” deposited in gastral cavity and damp-heat causes the nerve which charges intestine activity to be paralyzed. And then the patients get tympanites which results in gradually abdomen swelling and increase of waistline.
Therefore, the only way to prevent and cure hepatic edema (secondary obesity) is to use traditional Chinese medicine to relieve depression of the liver-qi and remove toxic heat at early stage. Many clinical cases suggest that patients will feel “body contraction” (reduce in body size) after systematic traditional Chinese medicine treatment, and that abdomen swelling gets apparently abated. In some cases, waistline would reduce with several inches.

  1. Steroid drugs should not be abused

The use of steroid drugs will bring many side effects. Retention of water and sodium causes whole body edema, moon-face, rhinoceros-shoulder, hyperphagia, deposition of body fattiness, and causes secondary obesity easily. But hormone often does the deed rapidly during treatment, and is usually abused by doctors and patients. So patients who have got hepatic edema or secondary obesity should try to avoid using hormone treatment.

In other words, it is not advisable for young women to reduce weight hastily when their body weight is above the standard. One should make sure that it is not related with secondary obesity (hepatic edema) and the best way is to consult a doctor to confirm the possibility of not having chronic hepatophilic viral disease before trying to reduce weight.
