(4) Edema – self examination techniques

  Are you having obesity or edema? Here, we introduce some self-detecting methods for you :

(1)          The following means edema when:-
¨           upper eyelid is found fleshy and tumid;

¨           lower eyelid has apparent pouch;

¨           face is gaunt and skin is withered and yellow or pale and dim;

¨           jowl of chin is full, flabby and pendulous.

¨           face figure is round and wide; especially the parotid field down ear is obvious.

(2)    It means edema :- when you stretch out your tongue and look into a mirror,   if the tongue is wide, fleshy, slightly white, and serrate teeth marking display at the edge.

(3)      When a healthy person lies down, his abdomen is plain and the thorax should be higher than the abdomen.  But a person with edema is usually found tumefied at abdomen. When he lies down, his abdomen outspreads to both sides (which looks like a supine frog); navel is shallow and smooth, circumambient fat pad is unobservable; concave at out sides of the both epimysium of abdominal rectus disappears.

(If it is obesity, the navel is sunken and the circumambient fat pad tumefies; half-moon concave appears at out sides of the both epimysium of abdominal rectus. The depth of navel is a criterion to judge the nutrition and growth status of an infant. Those whose navels are deep will have much fat and grow well. If an infant’s navel is smooth or even extrusive, the abdominal skin is thin and flabby when stretched with finger, and skin is dry, the infant has stored too little fat. It is cacotrophia).

If the abdomen plane is higher than the rib plane; waistline will become larger and larger, this is usually found among liverish patients who are supervened with gastrointestinal dysfunction. It is often the case when an edema patient cannot see his feet when he stands up and that his waist is unobservable. In addition, as the abdominal skin hardly exposed to sunlight and it is fit for comparison with other part of the skin, whether it is withered and yellow.

For chronic hepatitis patient, the costal regions are often asymmetrical. The left part of costal region is some narrow or even sunken, while the right part is tumefied outward. He will feel achy when the right costal region is percussed (it is called percussion tenderness over hepatic region).

(4)       Edema patient usually feels swollen at the extremity bottoms.
It is difficult to cover a ring on the finger. Arch of foot becomes plane and the patient will feel that the shoes have become narrow. The most typical symptom is that when the skin in front of shin is pressed, the dent is not pacified easily.  This is because the dent is affected by gravity and it is most obvious at dusk or before sleep.

When female body figure becomes fat and weight increases apparently, the skin at abdomen, buttocks and medial side of thigh will display white or pink disintegrated furrows. These are caused by the rupture of elastic fiber and the reasons for gravid furrow appearing during pregnancy.

Based on the description above, you can refer to your daily life to see if  the following symptoms appear :

  • feel weary or tired, have lost some memory,
  • get hypersomnia,
  • insomnia,
  • body ache,
  • short of breath,
  • chronic coryza,
  • repeating rheum (especially before or after menses),
  • obstinate cough,
  • much phlegm and recrudescent canker sore,
  • repeating diarrhea or diarrhea,
  • coprostasis (or alternant diarrhea, coprostasis),
  • right rib ache (liver ache),
  • hemorrhoids (may bleed repeatedly),
  • obstinate dim tumefaction,
  • repeating skin disease (especially rubella and eczema),
  • ear fluid imbalance (Meniere’s disease),
  • sustained hypertension,
  • chronic repeating hemicrania, or superfluous leucorrhea,
  • dysmenorrhea,
  • disordered menses (especially superfluous menses substance), etc.

        By referring to your past history and family history whether or not hepatitis and liver cancer occurred, it will then help you to understand if you have got hepatic edema. Those who have got acute hepatitis accompanied by antibody in blood test, or those who are virus carriers, or who have the above symptoms, may probably get chronic hepatitis in the active state.  They may get the complication of hepatic edema (secondary edema) at a higher rate. It is an urgent need for them to get better treatment as soon as possible.
