(1) What is obesity? What are the characteristics of obesity?

Obesity results from the deposition of surplus fat in the body. When a person takes in too many calories per meal, the redundant nutrients will usually be transformed into fattiness and be stored in different tissues or subcutis, which can result in obesity. It is considered overweight when a person’s weight is 10% over the standard body weight.  However, it is called obesity only when the weight is 20% over the standard.

Simple Obesity

Obesity caused solely by super-nutrition is called simple obesity. Fat distributes relatively uniformly, going with no morphological or functional changes of nervous system and incretion system. Therefore, people with light and medium obesity usually have no signs of discomfort. Their skin is smooth and glossy; the waistline is large while the waist is clear; the navel is sunken and the circumambient fat pad intumesces; arch-like concave, which makes the fat pad looks like a cake, appears at out sides of the both epimysium of abdominal rectus (on the vertical line of nipple); the breast and buttocks are plump, while their mental state is in gear.

On the other hand, people with light or medium obesity must control their diets moderately, especially to control the intake of high-fat and high-sugar food. It is advisable for them to take some physical work or exercise to prevent the obesity from aggravating. People should realize the harm of obesity and try their best to change the eating style including dinning habit, intake quality and quantity, limit the quantity of calorie consumed everyday. We encourage people to control their diets quantity, take physical examinations periodically, and then moderate their diets based accordingly. We expect these people to decrease their weight by 1~2 pounds in two weeks till to standard weight. This is the correct way to reduce weight.

Everyone fears fatness. It is not good that body figure grows large and weight increases in short term.  But reducing weight blindly, such as mortification, or using drug or exercising excessively, to fine down body weight is probably non benefical to our health or even harmful. Weight reduction is a long-term work and balanced nutrients are necessary to keep  healthy. To reduce weight, one cannot take over 1500 calories per day (a normal male is 2100-2300 calories, female is 1800-2100 calories). But it is important to keep the intake of food at the ratio of fats (<20%), proteins (about 35%) and amylums (about 45%). It is also advisable to  take some additional vitamins and minerals. Disproportional and excessively partial food will be harmful. Some people think that eating meat without amylum or amylum without meat will  cut down body weight.  Iin fact, it will cause many side effects such as hypertension.

Some Japanese scholars have taken some studies which proved that less ingestion of fat in everyday dinner causes more uneasiness. Recently, an English nutritionist has published a paper which suggested that vegetarian diet and low-fat food could not cut down weight, but would affect our intelligence or even detrimental to health.  A person having simple obesity does not need to reduce weight nor take drugs to reduce weight. It is important to understand that no one drug for weight-reduction is specific and that their side effects are still not sure. On the contrary, these drugs may cause incretion disorder or impair the  liver function and cause damages to the water and electrolyte equilibrium, and that results in many symptoms of clinic discomfort. Although sometime  weight can be reduced temporarily,  it always resume to previous level  or even increases faster than before. It is often reported that weight reduction blindly without a doctor’s advice always causes make our health worse. In the end health is lost for nothing in return.
